.J. Simpson, the former star football running back turned actor who gained notoriety due to a sensational trial on charges of murdering his ex-wife and her friend, has passed away at the age of 76 after battling cancer, confirmed by his family. He died at his Las Vegas home on Wednesday.
In a statement posted on his official X account, his family announced, "On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace."
Although Simpson was acquitted of the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman in his criminal trial, he was later found liable in a civil suit brought by the victims' families three years later.
Born Orenthal James Simpson in San Francisco, he gained fame by winning the Heisman Trophy while at USC and set records during his professional football career with the San Francisco 49ers and the Buffalo Bills.
