The upcoming electric BMW M3, expected to be released around 2027, will be the first electric model in the M series and will be based on BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture. It is anticipated to feature a quad-motor setup with a power output of around 1 MW, equivalent to 1,360 horsepower.
The electric M3 marks the end of the controversial oversized grille that has garnered attention in BMW’s recent designs, unless the company decides to keep it for purely aesthetic reasons.
In addition to the electric version, BMW will also offer a traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) version of the M3. This version will derive its power from the existing 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine known as the S58, with efforts to make it compliant with the stringent Euro 7 emissions standards.
The underlying platform for the new BMW 3 Series, including the electric M3, is the Neue Klasse architecture, which BMW introduced through the Vision Neue Klasse concept in September. This platform, set to debut in 2025, is designed to accommodate up to four electric motors, one for each wheel. This configuration allows for flexible power distribution between the axles, effectively transforming the electric car from all-wheel drive to a rear-wheel-drive setup as needed.
