On November 15, 2008 firefighter Walt Harris died during a house fire. The fire was arson and just last week authorities were able to indict those responsible and it appears murder charges will go forward for both men. It doesn't bring Walt back though.
Walt Harris was well loved in the Detroit Fire Department. His smile and easy going attitude, plus his love of firefighting, made him one of the most admired members of the very busy department. His loss was devastating to his brother firefighters. The loss at home was even worse and today, a year later, there is still heartbreak.
In the midst of budget cuts and tough political fights there are men and women who answer the call each and every day,. They know they may perish but they answer the call anyway. Walt Harris is an example of the courage of the fire service.
On this, the one year anniversary of his death, we salute the service of Walt Harris and firefighters around the world. God bless the Detroit Fire Department.
