Charleston, St. Andrews Firefighters Battle Blaze At Nail Salon

The Charleston Fire Department and St. Andrews Fire Department fought a fire in a one story nail salon last night. The building, once housing a bank, kept firefighters busy for over an hour. FirefighterHourly.com was privileged to witness the incident and watched as both departments worked together to bring the blaze under control.

Charleston firefighters arrived at 1947 to find smoke issuing from the building. The department quickly went to work setting up ladder four and stretching a line to the front door. Engines from West Ashley and downtown worked the scene establishing water supply and performing all other tasks assigned.

St. Andrews units arrived and set up their aerial, providing an extra means of egress from the roof, and using their rescue to light up the scene as well as providing a RIT Team.

Command officers from both departments worked the fire seamlessly.

Jay, It was a pleasure to shake your hand. So much has changed for us and more is to come but it was nice meeting you.

THis is how it should be done at a fire. Cooperation between departments is essential in such instances. Well done to all !!

someone needs to go to jifd and have a lil chat with BC gilck ! you scared to call the city? thats two fires now . you going to get busted one day with you shorts down and i hope to god that no one gets hurt because your to high on yourself to call for help or whatever it is ! this is time for change . if this was the city's fire everybody would be freaking out bc we didnt call JIFD. this needs to work both ways. please take this to heart and think real hard next time the tones drop! please be safe and take care of each other ! god bless the CHARLESTON 9

Hold up.
I thought the fire last night was in West AShley, hence, why St. Andy's and CFD were there. NOT JI's area, unless they were called for mutual aid. And unless B/C Glick did a duty exchange, he was not on shift last night. Are you talking about another fire here, Safety? Glick knows his shit.

I think he is talking about the TWO fires that JIFD had had on Glick's shift, lets get the facts, DID they call the city? How many personal were on staff at JIFD? I dont care what you think but if they didn't have the proper staffing for these fires, its not about BC Glick knowing his stuff its about the BC doing the right thing by having the proper staffing on scene. I really do not think if the JIFD is fully staffed that they will have the proper amount of staffing on the scene plus a RIT team.

WHY is the city not on automatic aid for ALL structure fires in the JIFD area? This way the help is on the road and it would be the same response on all of the JIFD reported structure fires, I think it is time for the two chief's to have a talk.

JIFD does not have the personnel they need, due to the commission. The commission is also the reason they do not have an automatic aid agreement with CFD. The voted it down a couple years back.

St.Andrews does not have the personnel either but the point here is everyone jumped on the city for not using automatic aid or even mutual aid for that matter and now for the most part depending on the shift they are. The smaller departments like the Andies and JI can ill afford not to utilize the CFD for man power. Annie it is not about who we like it anymore, it is about who can do the job and if he is not calling the city for manpower he doesn't get it or is just willing to knowing put his men and citizens in danger. Chief Mo said it best before " This is not a game"

There is mutual aid. When St. Andrews and James Island monitors the citys radios and respond before they are even called. Honestly, they need to just become on big department. Why are there 3 different departments if they cant handle their own. wh

Higher Learning-

I understand that it's not a popularity contest. I also understand that it's not a game. Everyone always ends up going around in circles about the mutual aid thing. Yes it needs to be done. Yes every call can be picked apart and critiqued. Yes things can be done more efficiently. This is not a new topic on ff hourly, but believe me, I get it.

Higher, read my open post, post!

Safety are you nobody? I thought everyone was somebody or someone. So if you are someone why dont you man up and come to sta. one and have a chat with B/C Glick? I am sure he is not scared. I don't really follow FFH. and this is why, you get a post that is positive for all involved which strengthens the relationships between departments, then someone scared of stating his or her name goes completely off subject and starts bashing someone.P.S. before you post a comment have the facts straight. If you did you would not have said some of things you did. It seems to me the relationship between JIFD and CFD has greatly improved over the past few years. I personnaly have always gotten along with brothers and sisters of CFD, and if we ever hade a problem with one another we came back to one of the stations and discussed it like men and women face to face. Its called mutual respect.
Lets face it we all have our problem, and i think most are trying to work on them. A positive approach to a negative problem will only help change it. A negative approach well you get it dont you?
Jay thanks for posting my comment, everyone stay safe.

I still don't know why it's up to the BC's to call for mutual Aid. This should be an automatic thing that happens on the initial call to 911. If the call requires 3 pumpers, 1 ladder, 1 ALS Ambulance and one BC: then that is what they send. And make the closest ones sent regardless of jurisdiction.

NOTE:

This is not an open post. The subject was clearly defined and yet here we are, sitting at the bottom of a post, on a day when there is an open post, and people are talking about another department.

Brad to address you directly your candor about not visiting Hourly is appreciated. In fact it always amazes me how many people who don't visit end up on the site anyway.

To put an end to this discussion the City of Charleston and St. Andrews worked very well together at the nail salon. THAT is what the post was about.

Feel free to discuss other issues in the open post section.

Jay and others, I am not trying to open up anything with this but I want to clear a point up. I have stayed away for a while and not posted but I cannot stand by and let this one go.

It seems that some people have decided to lay a few false claims comcerning B/C Glick, concerning the fires that have happened on his shift recently. Well, I am on his shift and I can think of all 3 of the fires we had in November and the city was called for everyone of them. So if these people think he did not ask for help then they are misinformed. The first fire was at Folly and Needlegrass (City Ladder 5, Engine 7 and the Air Truck). The second fire was on Riverland Drive (City Engine 7 was R.I.T) and the third fire was on Plymouth Ave with City Engine 13 and Ladder 5. Ask Capt Marty, he and I talked in the front yard for a few minutes at that one. So, gentlemen if you know of another fire on my shift in the last month (and I have not taken a day off) please let us all know about them. The guys on this shift have no issue with having the city respond, we would love the help.

Remember we are all should be in this for one thing and its not about who looks good, it's about making sure we protect the people and whatever property we can.

Tony:

This thread was incorrectly used by people wanting to discuss other issues. The only way to control it is to ask people to take it to Open Post Tuesday. Your comment can stand because you are providing facts. My intent was to address this issue on Sunday after being informed about the erroneous comments. Thank you for straightening it out.

Jay
