In but the latest piece of bad news to come down the wire the Mayor of Philadelphia will seek to close five fire stations. The reason is the same one given every year; the economy is providing budget slashers with a great excuse.
The bravest in Philly are fired up over this lunatic move and the mayor's belief it won't have an impact on service. What can he possibly be thinking? The closure of one station will alter responses and the closure of five will put citizens at risk.
Later today we will discuss this in a podcast and talk about other areas in the city the Mayor could trim the fat.

Jay, a quick correction, Mayor Nutter is proposing staffing cuts to 5 Engine companies and 2 Ladder companies.
NO stations are to be closed. Ironically, several years ago as a city councilman he opposed fire suppression staffing cuts in order to beef up the EMS Division of the Phila.Fire Dept.
